Before & After: IKEA Desk Gets a Quick Glam Makeover

After Dana graduated from grad school, her plain IKEA desk was more of an embarrassment than something she enjoyed. With the trusty DIY combo of spray paint and contact paper, this blank slate goes glam:

I had this desk sitting in my apartment for years and while it was useful to do homework on, once I graduated from grad school, I didn’t really have a need for the plain desk anymore. Since I wasn’t quite ready to buy a new desk, I looked for ways I could restyle it for my new apartment. I had seen a nightstand makeover that involved marble contact paper, so I decided to try that out with my desk and see how that turned out. After that, all of the pieces started to fall into place with the gold accents and little trinkets to put on top of my desk.
After this makeover, I’m much less embarrassed to have this desk sitting in my room. Previously, I would let clutter build up on top of the desk since I didn’t care to see the plain white top. However, I now actually make an effort to keep it clean so the marble top can shine through.
The materials I used include:
IKEA Desk
Gold Spray Paint
Marble Contact Paper
X-ACTO Knife (or a regular knife or sharp scissors)
Painter’s Tape
The best part of the project was that I already had many of the materials in my home, so all I really had to spend money on was the marble contact paper, which I got on sale for $11!
