These Are The Books Everyone Will Be Talking About This Summer

Memorial Day is around the corner, so we’re officially allowed to start planning our summers, wearing white jeans… and updating our TBR lists. One of our favorite bookworm communities, Goodreads, used their 75 million members to compile the most anticipated books of summer. They took a look at lists created by users, how many times a book was added to “Want to Read” shelves, and restricted their picks to books with a four-star rating or above (Goodreads members get early access to upcoming titles!)

It’s a fast, engrossing read that all of your friends will want to borrow.

Everyone knows that some of the best stories are set in summer—and Williams’ latest novel is no exception. Set in dual timelines on Winthrop Island during the summers of 1951 and 1969, the story follows Miranda Schuyler, who initially struggles to fit into her new, wealthy stepfamily while mourning the loss of her father in the war. Eighteen years later, Miranda finds her own fame and status, while the secluded, wealthy world of the island falls apart. With family drama, heartbreak, and murder, this complex story leaves plenty for discussion.

For fans of Sarah Jessica Parker, you’ll want to pick up the first novel published by her new imprint at Hogarth Books. Parker says Mirza’s “heartrending and timely story is a gutting pleasure… Ms. Mirza painstakingly details the life of an Indian Muslim family in America and their children’s search to feel whole, fulfilled, and content.” The family returns home for the wedding of eldest daughter Hadia, and with the ceremony as a backdrop, the secrets, bonds, and history of the family begin to unfold.

Groff’s last bestseller, Fates and Furies, was one of President Obama’s favorite books of the year. Florida is a collection of short stories where the landscape of Florida is a living, breathing character in itself. These compelling stories are marked by darkness, as Groff uses the hazards of the landscape to exacerbate the psychological and emotional traumas we all can relate to—including loneliness, anger, and family trauma. Warning: These stories are so engrossing, you might miss your stop.

Need a good mystery to tide you over while you wait for season two of “Big Little Lies?” Sager’s novel starts during a camp game night gone wrong, when a young Emma watched her fellow cabinmates disappear into the darkness, and never saw them again. Years later, Emma returns to camp to teach art class, and begins digging through a troubling web of clues to figure out what actually happened to her friends.
