Christopher Hildebrand, an industrial designer, and his wife Sara Moriarty, after years of living in quirky but cramped older homes, decided to design and build a home to their own specifications.

Originally planning to restore an early 20th-century cottage in Richmond, Virginia, the couple realized there was no hope of salvaging the existing structure on the hillside site. By coming up with a new plan to rebuild the idea of the house, they were able to retain its spirit while breaking away from its limitations. This tactic also allowed their home to remain in dialogue with the existing vernacular architecture of the neighborhood, a working-class community of one and two story cottages and bungalows that in the East End of Richmond.
